Is Minoxidil the Right Solution For You?
Minoxidil is used to treat many hair loss conditions including pattern hair loss and stress-related shedding. It's a good option for people who have less advanced hair loss. Minoxidil works on the entire scalp. But if you're specifically worried about your hairline, it could be an important treatment to add to your routine (Mirmirani et al., 2014).

We've rounded up some of the most frequently asked questions about regular and compounded minoxidil.

How long does it take for minoxidil to work?
In general, patients will need to take minoxidil for 3-6 months before they start to see noticeable improvements in their hair. Sometimes it could take shorter or longer, depending on how your body responds to the medication.
Some patients also find that they experience some shedding right after they start minoxidil. This is fairly common, but can make it seem like it's taking longer for the medication to take effect.
Can minoxidil cause hair loss?
No, minoxidil doesn't cause hair loss. But what can happen, is a temporary increase in hair shedding in the first few weeks or even months of taking minoxidil. Minoxidil shedding can happen with either the topical or oral form of this medication.
Why does this happen? It's a sign that your hair follicles are responding to the medication. In order for stronger, more resilient hair growth to occur, old hairs need to be pushed out. You can think of it like resetting your hair follicles. It should go away with continued use. If shedding gets worse or doesn't resolve, you should reach out to your doctor. Learn more about minoxidil shedding.
When does minoxidil shedding start?
The timing of minoxidil shedding will vary from patient to patient. Remember, not everyone will experience shedding. In most cases, it starts within the first few weeks of beginning treatment with minoxidil. This shedding should go away with time.
If the shedding doesn't improve, it's important to let your doctor know so that they can investigate and help determine whether it's minoxidil that is causing your hair to fall out, or some other underlying medical reason.
How often should you wash your hair when using minoxidil?
Taking minoxidil doesn't typically require you to change your usual hair care routine. Even if you're taking topical minoxidil, you'll still want to keep your hair and scalp clean as a way of setting the foundation for healthy hair growth. In fact, if you don't wash your hair frequently enough, you could end up with excess build-up of products or natural oils that could cause scalp irritation.
If you're taking oral minoxidil, again, maintain your usual hair care routine. Some patients do experience shedding related to taking minoxidil. If this is the case, you may wish to reduce your hair washing frequency to cut back on hair loss. But the truth is, this hair needs to come out anyway to make room for new growth. Unless your doctor recommends something different, the key is to maintain a clean, healthy scalp.
Can I take compounded minoxidil if I'm already taking Vitamin D?
This is a great question. It is possible to take too much Vitamin D.
Compounded minoxidil with Vitamin D may be safely taken alongside any other supplements, but recommend that you consult with your doctor to ensure that these amounts are within your daily limits.
How much Vitamin D is in compounded minoxidi?
Our compounded minoxidil contains anywhere from 1000 to 2000 IUs of Vitamin D. The exact amount will depend on the dosage of minoxidil that you're prescribed. These levels are generally safe for the adult population. If you live in a region that receives less sunlight on average, you may find that supplementing with these levels of Vitamin D can come with additional health benefits.
Do I need a prescription to get minoxidil?
It depends on the type of minoxidil. Topical minoxidil can be purchased without a prescription from most drugstores or pharmacies. However, oral minoxidil and XYON's compounded oral minoxidil with Vitamin D, both require a prescription. You can get a prescription by starting an online intake through the XYON platform.
Can I switch to oral minoxidil?
If you’re already using a hair growth treatment and would like to add oral minoxidil to your hair growth routine, we recommend scheduling a consultation with either a XYON specialist physician or your doctor. If you're a current XYON customer, you can manage your treatment through your XYON account and update your treatment preference.
