Frequently Asked

Common questions about Topical Finasteride & Minoxidil Solution

What is a compounded medication?

A compounded medication is a custom formulation prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy based on a physician’s prescription and is tailored to a patient’s specific needs. Examples include combining different FDA-approved medications or preparing topical versions of oral medications.

XYON offers doctors the ability to prescribe finasteride, dutasteride or minoxidil compounded using patented SiloxysSystem™ technology, a specialized gel delivery system.

Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, meaning they have not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality. However, they may be prescribed by a licensed physician if they determine that the potential benefits outweigh the risks for a given patient.

Why does this formulation use a higher concentration of finasteride or dutasteride?

Compounded topical medications available through XYON use the patented SiloxysSystem™ Gel technology, which was designed to help slow the release of finasteride or dutasteride into the skin over time and to reduce the amount of medication absorbed systemically.

Because of the gel's ability to control the release and retain medications in the skin, a higher concentration is used to help ensure that enough medication is delivered to the scalp to achieve the intended effect.

How long does it take to see results?

The time needed to see visible results depends on the extent of your hair loss. Everyone differs somewhat in their responsiveness to treatments. Some patients may notice early improvements within the first 3-4 months. Clinical trials of finasteride or dutasteride show that most patients notice significant improvement around 6 months, with more noticeable regrowth typically occurring between 12 and 18 months of consistent use.

It’s important to note that both new growth and slowing or stopping further hair loss are signs that the medication is working. Without treatment, men with androgenetic alopecia will lose approximately 5-10% of their hair per year.

Can I use this medication after a hair transplant?

Yes, medications like topical finasteride can be used after a hair transplant to help maintain both transplanted hairs and the hairs around the transplanted area(s). Many hair transplant surgeons and XYON clinic partners choose to include these compounded topical medications as part of post-procedure care.

Pattern hair loss is a progressive condition, so even transplanted areas can be affected over time. When to start treatment after surgery varies by procedure, so it’s important to follow your surgeon’s guidance. Generally, for topical formulations, surgeons will recommend starting topical treatments around two weeks after the transplant procedure.

What happens if I stop using it?

Pattern hair loss is a progressive condition, so consistency is key to maintaining your results. If you stop using your medication, hair loss will gradually resume over time, typically within 6 to 12 months.

Is this available for women?

XYON offers prescription options for women with female pattern hair loss, when appropriate and only as prescribed by a physician. After you complete the clinical intake form, your prescribing physician will review your medical information to determine whether this is a suitable option for you.

Finasteride is not FDA-approved for use in women and may pose risks if used during pregnancy, while trying to become pregnant, or while breastfeeding.

What's the $20 consultation fee?

All patients are required to have their medical history reviewed by a physician before a prescription can be issued. This consultation also gives the physician an opportunity to provide personalized guidance based on your needs.

Consultation fees are included in the cost of subscription plans.

For one-time (non-subscription) orders, a $20 consultation fee is included in your order total. If you later upgrade to a subscription plan, this $20 fee will be credited toward your subscription.

How do prescription renewals work?

Your prescription is valid for 12 months from the date it’s issued. If you're on a subscription, your deliveries will continue automatically within that period, whether you're on a monthly or every 90 days schedule. Non-subscribers can reorder anytime while their prescription is still valid.

Before your prescription expires, you’ll receive a notification to review and update your medical information through your XYON account. Your physician will use this information to assess your prescription and confirm next steps.

You can manage, pause, or cancel future subscription renewals at any time through your account.
